Trail running shoes are special running shoes for unpaved paths off the asphalt. Unlike road running shoes, they have a grippy sole that gives you secure footing on uneven, slippery, or rocky terrain. Over longer distances, your feet often swell a bit, so it can make sense to choose trail running shoes a size bigger. However, it’s important that the shoes still fit snugly and your foot doesn’t slide around inside. It’s best to try them on in the afternoon or evening when your feet are slightly swollen, and to use the socks you wear for trail running. When it comes to trail running shoes, it’s all about optimal support and maximum grip. The foot needs to be securely enclosed to minimize the risk of injury. What’s really important is:

• Cushioning: The steeper and more technical the terrain, the less cushioning is recommended. For ultra runs, you need maximum cushioning.
• Energy return: For steep mountain runs, you need maximum energy return, while for everyday runs, a medium to minimal amount is fine.
• Protection: Protection against external obstacles (e.g. rocks), ranges from maximum to moderate to minimal.
• Fit: Feet tend to swell over long distances, which is why a wide fit is good. For versatile use, a normal fit is best, and for short mountain hikes, a shoe with a tight fit is advantageous.

You can comfortably use trail running shoes for tours on easy forest paths. They offer enough comfort and grip on less challenging trails. However, they are less suitable for alpine, rocky, or rooty paths, as grip and stability are limited. In such cases, a mountaineering shoe is recommended to avoid injuries and ensure a secure grip on challenging terrain.
